Say What? 8 Unusual Road Signs

One way signs

Road signs are an integral part of our transportation system. They help us get from Point A to Point B, avoid dangers along the way and obey traffic laws. Some signs are so familiar to us that we already know what they say -- like "Yield," "Stop" and "Railroad Crossing." But, in our travels, sometimes we come across signs that are unique -- either because of an uncommon message they convey, interesting artwork or unusual placement. Here are a few signs you might not see every day:Witch SignThe Massachusetts town of Salem is synonymous with witches -- and the signs are everywhere. More than 300 years after the infamous 1692 witch trials, many of the town's tourist attractions focus on witches, from the Salem Witch Museum to various ghost and graveyard tours and historic sites related to the trials. This painted street sign features one of many portrayals of a broom-riding witch that can be seen in the city:[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="640"] Photo by: Alonso Javier Torres via Flickr, CC BY 2.0[/caption]One-Way Street -- but Which Way?This confusing pair of signs was captured on a street in New Orleans, La.[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500"] Photo by: Chuck Coker via Flickr, CC BY-ND 2.0[/caption] A Very Precise Speed LimitThe speed limit on Lockhart Gulch Road in Scotts Valley, Calif., is 14 1/2 mph, according to this street sign. Unfortunately, most speedometers don't calculate partial miles per hour -- so maybe it's a good idea to stay under 14![caption id="" align="alignnone" width="372"] Photo by: Richard Masoner via Flickr, CC BY-SA 2.0[/caption]Precise... and Not Very FastEqually precise, this unusual speed limit sign in Salem, Ore., holds drivers to an even lower limit.  There are a lot of other rules to follow, too![caption id="" align="alignnone" width="480"] Photo by: Jason McHuff via Flickr, CC BY-SA 2.0[/caption]Turn Right to Go LeftMaking a left turn isn't as easy as it usually is at this Nebraska intersection. Think carefully![caption id="" align="alignnone" width="479"] Photo by: Paul Heaberlin via Flickr, CC BY-SA 2.0[/caption]Photos: 1/4 MileWe think this Death Valley road sign is alerting drivers to a photo opportunity a short ways down the road -- but these eager photographers apparently just couldn't wait.[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500"] Photo by: Hitesh Shah via Flickr, CC BY 2.0[/caption]If You Hit This...Not many signs out there act as a bridge clearance height-tester, but this undoubtedly useful sign in Columbus, Texas, does. Tall-truck drivers, beware![caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500"] Photo by: Matthew Rutledge via Flickr, CC BY 2.0[/caption]Anaconda OpportunityThis highway exit sign is obviously directing drivers toward two places, called Anaconda and Opportunity. But the juvenile in us keeps asking, "What kind of opportunity can an enterprising anaconda seek over there?"[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500"] Photo by: Scott Robinson via Flickr, CC BY 2.0[/caption]Have you come across any interesting or unusual road signs in your travels?
